NeuroDiversity Affirming Training & Supervision

NDATS works to promote an affirming view of neurodiversity, specifically adult Autism and ADHD.

Firstly, by working directly with Autistic people and their partners to educate, encourage, and affirm their neurodivergence and create a deep understanding of what it means to be Autistic for them as individuals and to help them to live life in a way that is sustainable, safe and fulfilling.

Secondly, by providing professional training and clinical supervision for counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists (as well as other allied health professionals) and supervision. Research shows that many professionals have insufficient knowledge about autism and are unsure how to best meet the needs of their Autistic clients, including how to adapt their services. Many hold myths or pathologising views of Autistics. It cannot be up to their Autistic clients to have to educate the people they look to (and pay) for help.

We encourage all professionals who work or engage with Autistic people to ensure that they undertake Autistic led neurodiversity affirming professional development on autism and ADHD.

What is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity is a word to describe the diversity of human brains and minds, gifting different skills, abilities and needs.  A similar idea to how biodiversity refers to biological diversity.

Neurodiversity includes Autism, ADHD, learning differences, mental health conditions, as well as acquired neurodivergences, such as dementia.

The focus of NDATS is on Autism and ADHD.

What is Affirming?

Encouragement to view neurodivergence as a positive characteristic with valid strengths, which does not need to assimilate to the neuro-majority.
